For the employee who drives a truck (combination) with a permitted total weight of more than 3,500 kg and with a load capacity (according to the registration certificate) of more than 500 kg, the labour laws for transport apply. This means that instead of the general working and rest times, the standards in the schedule below apply. Unless the company or vehicle falls under one of the general or special exceptions also mentioned in the schedule.

The purpose of the tachograph is to improve road safety, to guarantee drivers' working conditions, to promote fair competition and to facilitate the management of transport companies. All data can be retrieved in the event of an inspection. The digital tachograph is compulsory in all countries of the European Union and in Switzerland.
